Catahoula Zine

Catahoula Zine

Catahoula Zine

I’m excited to announce a project I’ve been working on called Catahoula; the first issue of this quarterly zine features words and photography by yours truly. I’ve toyed with the idea of creating a zine for several years, so I am ecstatic this project has finally come to fruition.

The first issue features “Allons,” a story I wrote this past summer about what it was like to grow up with a swamp for a backyard. I grew up in a typical Westbank subdivision, but my experience was slightly different than my neighbor’s thanks to the proximity of my parent’s house to the levee. Living next to the swamp was fun, but it wasn’t easy. Snakes, armadillos, wasps, and a slew of other animals constantly invaded our home and yard, and the threat of hurricanes was ever present. Growing up in this environment really shaped the person that I am today: someone who yearns for the outdoors and tries not to place too much value on material things since you never know when a storm might take them away. I haven’t lived on “the other side of the river” for 15 years, but I try to make it to Barataria Preserve, the location the essay centers around, at least twice a year. All but one of the photographs (the squirrel photo was shot at Audubon Park) were taken there.

Order a print or digital copy of Catahoula through MagCloud by clicking here. Print copies are $8.00 and digital is $2.00. I’m also giving away two digital copies of Catahoula to two lucky readers. Leave your email in the comments section for a chance to enter. I will pick two winners at random. Winners will be contacted early next week.

In order to win, you must like their page on Facebook and comment below, stating which piece is your favorite on their website. The winner will be announced on Wednesday, February 27th.

How’s that for an attention grabber? While I don’t condone attending events just got get good n’ liquored up on someone else’s dime, Bombay Sapphire needs to borrow your taste buds to help select the official cocktail for Art for Art’s Sake. Might as well heed the call, right?

Complimentary hors d’oeuvres will be served up from Carmo Cafe and door prizes too.  Gin ain’t your thing? There will also be a cash bar for other liquor and non-alcoholic drinks. Swing by L’Entrepot Gallery this Saturday from 6-9pm.

A Call For New Orleans Artists

I took two years of art class in high school, thinking a little instruction would do me good. I’ve never been a natural talent when it comes to sketching or painting, but somehow I  made it into the National Art Honor Society and won a department award. I think it was one part hard work, two parts the teacher feeling sorry for me. Having peaked my sophomore year, my rudimentary skills have dwindled to glorified stick figures. Needless to say, I’m sitting this one out but if you’ve got real talent and live in the New Orleans area, enter your original artwork in the 2012 Bombay Sapphire Artisan Series in New Orleans, hosted by Cathedral Creative Studios and L’entrepot Gallery.

All local 2D and 3D visual artists may submit original artwork before August 24, 2012. Participants will be featured at L’entrepot Gallery on Julia Street. Winners will earn the opportunity to compete at Art Basel Miami, with the chance to exhibit at Rush Arts Gallery in New York.  Submit your work at the Bombay Sapphire website or contact info@cathedralnola.com or 504-333-6713 for more information.

Sinnin’ and Feudin’: Southern Contests

I grew up Catholic, or Cat’lic if you’re going to properly pronounce it wrong. So I know all about sinning- and may or may not have done a little myself. The Creative Nonfiction Foundation (CNF) wants to hear all about your repentance worthy behaviors for their Southern Sin Essay Contest. Your story can be serious or humorous but you have to tell the truth- after all lying is a sin. Deadline is July 31st, selected essays will be published in Creative Nonfiction #47 and one lucky writer will win $5,000 for Best Essay. To submit, visit: www.creativenonfiction.org

From their press release:
“Creative Nonfiction (CNF) and the Oxford Creative Nonfiction Writers Conference & Workshop are looking for essays that capture the South in all its steamy sinfulness–whether you’re skipping church to watch football, coveting your neighbor’s Real Housewife of Atlanta, or just drinking an unholy amount of sweet tea. Confess your own wrongdoings, gossip about your neighbor’s depravity, or tell us about your personal connection to a famous Southerner headed down the broad road to Hell. Whether the sin you discuss is deadly or just something that would make your mama blush we want to hear about it in an essay that is at least partially narrative–employing scenes, descriptions, etc.”

If your group of friends are feuding like a modern day version of the  Hatfields vs. the McCoys, you might want to take it to reality t.v. A well known cable network wants to share the blood bath with a national audience, so they’re putting out a casting call in the New Orleans area. If your group of friends is age 21+ and have a score to settle with a rival group, e-mail reality@lizlewis.com with the following info.

Tasty Southern Living

Southern Living magazine hosted The South’s Tastiest Town Awards and sometime since the beginning of the year you may have been asked through facebook or email to vote for your favorite, most flavorful southern town. Well folks the votes are in and Lafayette, LA is the tastiest, winning by over 35,000 votes. A place I am proud to call home for so many reasons just added another. Its full of flavor.

The Southern Living editors chose the top 10 based on specific criteria then opened the polls allowing resident and visitor voters to chose in which order the tasty towns of the south ranked.  Louisville, New Orleans, Charleston, Charlottesville, Houston, Birmingham, Decatur, Baltimore and Raleigh were among the competition (in order of rank). From heirloom recipes to homegrown gumbos and excess of southern comforts “cayenne-spiked Acadiana” boiled over with success.  Our unique food specific to our region, the influence of our food to our community, the variety of prices to eat a good hearty local meal, the practice of restaurants sourcing and supporting local, along with our bounty of festivals that celebrate our yummy cajun and creole heritage, were all the deciding factors that made Lafayette a winner.

The French Press, owners pictured above, is my hubby and I’s favorite spot for brunch.  Located downtown in a beautiful aged brick building that used to be home to the local newspaper printing plant. Our tastiest choice is the breakfast croissant with eggs, avocado, sprouts, tomato, bacon, spicy chipotle aioli and goat cheese, so yummy.
When eating good local home-cookin’ my most satisfying favorite is chicken andouille gumbo with potato salad. For a traditional experience you serve your potato salad on top your bowl of gumbo. When the months are warmer my tastiest favorite would be crawfish etouffe.
Paula Disbrowe, Southern Living senior editor says it well when she says, “Lafayette’s distinct culinary identity as the capital of Cajun country, its spicy, sausage-laden roots, and a new generation of locals devoted to preserving their heritage while putting a fresh spin on tradition have made it an incredibly satisfying place to eat”.  I agree and I believe that our ‘new generation of locals’ has heaping spoonfulls of flavor to offer and it doesn’t stop there.  It is exciting to see Lafayette get recognition for its culturally rich heritage and tradition, while it is inspiring to be part of such a seasoned community.
I have to say it’s nice to see that the restaurants recognized in Southern Living’s A Perfect Eating Day in Lafayette  believe in buying local produce and supporting local farmers when possible. I think that says great things about our future of eating out. Together we are growing a more sustainable Lafayette.
In other Lafayette news Cochon, Southern Living’s mentioned source for a perfect dinner, will be serving samples along with three other farm-to-table restaurants at Boho Mercantile’s fashion show fundraiser Fresh & Local a benefit for Acadiana Food Circle. So come on out for a good cause where you can nibble samples of some of the tastiest treats while listening to local music and taking in fresh fashion.  An evening of flavor and style.
