Fall Favorites For Friday

If you’ve followed Slow Southern Style since the beginning you know I love doing themed weekly posts. Mannequin Monday, Tattoo Tuesdays, and my new weekly guest posts have been fun but now that we are in September I can’t stop thinking about my fall wardrobe and how I’m going to build upon what I already own. At the end of each week I’m going to introduce y’all to my Fall Favorites For Friday with a different theme for each post.

Color blocking has been talked about extensively all over the internet but this Diane Von Furstenburg dress deserves a nod. We all know it won’t cool down until the end of October so this dress can be worn as is then layered when the air turns crisp.

Color blocked DVF for less than $200!
Paper bag waists are another big trend, this one in a fun tangerine with a high waist. I like mixing orange with charcoal grey to avoid looking like I’m celebrating Halloween early.

At this time of year I also start riding my bike more  but just because I’m on two wheels doesn’t mean I want to look like a bike messenger all the time.  This cross body bag is dressy enough to bring to a nice dinner and the burnt orange is an interesting alternative to brown.

While wide leg jeans are making a comeback for fall it’s not surprising that the sexy secretary look is gaining ground again. Avoid looking frumpy by keeping the blouse slightly sheer for an alluring look.

So what do you think of the trends for fall? What are you excited to wear when the weather cools off a bit?

Summer to Fall Transition

Slow Southern Style is going to be featuring a few guest bloggers each Monday to liven the place up and get some fresh voices on a variety of subjects. This week Meghan Wright of Fashionably Meg is filling in. Interested in guest blogging? Contact me at nolagurl at gmail dot com.

Summer to Fall Transition: Southern Style

Transitioning your wardrobe from Summer to Fall is a bit different in a warmer climate. Down here it goes from “Sooo hot,” to “Hot.” The key is to have Summery pieces, but in Fall colors; and to start shopping for those items around July so you can phase out your Spring and Summer pieces. I’ve included pieces that are wearable, affordable and trendy for the coming season:
Easy to Layer Dresses –

Summer dresses in darker colors and patterns that are still comfortable on a hot day are perfect for going into Fall. Wear them alone while it’s still a scorcher out and play around with layering as the weather gets cooler.

Topshop – Forever 21 – Topshop – Modcloth

Anything but Black Tights –

Black tights are too Winter and at the end of Summer/early Fall they can appear too formal. Colored tights are becoming increasingly popular; so go for colors like dark green, mustard yellow, maroon, or a even pretty cream color.  Or get creative with the tights above.

All – Modcloth

Lightweight Cardigans/Vests/Sweaters & Such –
This one is a given, they are the ultimate layering piece.  They’re easy to carry during the day when it’s still warm, and perfect to throw on at night when it cools down. They aren’t just Summer-Fall layering pieces, but perfect day-night pieces as well.

They are also must-haves down here because once Winter approaches you don’t need layers of chunky sweaters and coats, you need one of the following and a good jacket.

Forever 21 – Nasty Gal – Forever 21

Ankle Boots –

90’s grunge is making a huge comeback, and I personally love a cute dress with some great some boots. That’s of course if you’re willing to put up with boots in July, but I promise it’ll pay off! Invest in a good pair, nothing too high (keep it ankle length or go for a fun cowboy boot) or you’ll be jumping ahead a season. Add a little edge to your look by wearing them with a dress or skirt, then add some jeans or tights once the temperature drops.

Get ready for fall

In the retail world fall is happening as we speak. That said trying on sweaters in New Orleans in August is just about the last thing I want to do.Fortunately y’all can strategically spend your summer clothing budget so the pieces you buy now will carry you into cooler months. In the winter I wear a tank top all the time since New Orleans weather is so unpredictable. If I go to work in a sweater I’m stripping it off mid-day or I’m miserably overheated.

Any purchases from now until October need to be colors that won’t scream summer. This means exercise restraint at the sales rack! Retailers are slashing prices on summer styles but don’t get bamboozled into buying a trend that will be dated next year. This means  tanks need to be layer worthy and blouses have to do a quick change with a cardigan thrown on top. Also stick with dresses that can be layered with tights and a long sleeve tee underneath or a sweater on top.

This sweet top from J. Crew  will be really easy to wear now and in the fall. Just throw a cardigan over, add skinny jeans (still my fav) and you’ve got an instant fall look.

Dashiki prints were all over the late summer/early fall magazines and it is easy to see why. These playful prints blur the line between seasons. This Marc by Marc Jacobs skirt, available at Saks, can be worn now with sandals, then make it winter worthy with a pair of thick tights.

T-shirts are good year ’round and Saints tees are almost always worn out of season. Get ready for game day with Skip N’ Whistle’s “Do not cross” tee.

If you work in a freezing cold office the “All the Thrill” jacket from Hemline will work now and well after hurricane season is over.

So what fall fashions are y’all looking forward to?

When the #?%! is it getting cool?

So y’all know that fall doesn’t really exist in Southeastern Louisiana. These past few weeks have been a tease with nights dipping into the upper 70s only followed by a week of 85 degrees and high humidity.  Everyone eagerly anticipates the crispness of cool weather in September but it always remains hot around these parts until Halloween or later.  That said I’m still pining for some new fall clothes as I’m tired of wearing summer dresses and I long for an entirely new winter wardrobe.

The Black to Basics Skirt is a great base for a myriad of NOLA winter options. At $34 you can certainly purchase a handful of accessories to wear with it. Available at Francesca’s.

I’m kind of loving these Sanita hot pink clogs available at Feet First. They would be cute with jeans or cords when comfort is a necessity.

I’m in love with this feather and rhinestone headband available from LF. This is a great piece to wear with just jeans and a tee or the topper on a fanciful look.

If Owls are your thing Fossil has a sweet little coin purse available at Dillard’s. I like the teal and dusty rose combination with the silver studs they used for the eyes.
