NOLA Fashion Week is back for their fourth season and with an array of seminars, fashion shows, and parties it’s going to be a jam packed week of things to do. Fashion’s Night Out New Orleans

I was supposed to be road tripping to Austin this past weekend but Hurricane Isaac screwed up my plans. Gotta fix the moldy ceiling before having fun, right? Since I was stuck in New Orleans, I made last minute plans to attend Fashion’s Night Out at the Shops At Canal Place. I went last year as a featured blogger for Saks Fifth Avenue and I have to say, I was really impressed how much this event has grown. Fashion Week New Orleans and Amelie G hosted a runway show and a stylist challenge while the shops stayed open late.  I ran into a lot of familiar faces and met some new friends as well. Any event that’s meant to strengthen the community is a good one. Unfortunately I didn’t get the chance to snap any pictures, but my friend Chanel has several on her blog and Invade NOLA’s photos if you want a more in depth recap of the night.

RAW: natural born artists in New Orleans

Join Slow Southern Style favorite Kaci Thomassie for a night of fashion, art, music, film, and performance art as she participates in Solstice, put on by RAW: natural born artists.  This independent arts organization carefully selects up and coming artists in 54 cities and provides them with resources and exposure to grow in their respective disciplines. Catch their first New Orleans show this Thursday at 12 Bar on Fulton Street from 8:00pm until midnight. Dress code is cocktail attire, tickets can be purchased on RAW’s website.

A Frugal Freret Street Fashion Show

Come join me for a night of fashion on Freret Street this coming Sunday as part of Yelp’s Passport to Freret Street promotion. I’ll be judging a special frugal fashion challenge alongside Missy Wilkinson from the Gambit Weekly. Contestants will be asked to purchase up to $25 worth of clothing from Bloomin’ Deals Thrift Store, which supports the Junior League. The theme is cruise wear and anything from “castaway chic” to “pool side fabulous” goes.

The best Gilligan or Skipper impersonator will receive two tickets to Tales of The Cocktail and the after party. For more information, including rules of the contest, visit the Yelp event listing, get your best outfit together, and may the best thrifter win!

Express Rock the Sidewalk New Orleans

Most of you have heard of pop up shops, those fun temporary stores that spring up, sell some wares for a day or even a few weeks then seemingly vanish into thin air. Most have you have heard of Express, the popular mall brand that stocks basics as well as current trends. 


 Express took the pop up concept one step further and did a pop up fashion show in the French Quarter last Friday and I was one of the lucky people to get the memo. If you didn’t get to go you are in luck! The Express fall ad campaign was shot during the runway show so footage will be displayed all across the country.





The streets of the Quarter are narrow, with not much wiggle room for a car and a bike to pass through. In the case of Rock the Sidewalk this made for the perfect space for a catwalk and enough room for spectators to get up close and observe every detail of every look.

  Even on this steamy New Orleans day with high heat and humidity I was craving the fall looks for next season.  The two overall themes were layering neutrals and color blocking. Different entities, I know but it makes sense to balance out a wardrobe of bright colors with more somber shades to suit every mood. 


I really appreciated the chunky, short sleeved sweaters layered over a long sleeve t-shirt with well cut slim jeans. Sequins and fur added lux embellishment for a very rich, textural interest to pep up the monochrome looks.

 On the opposite spectrum there were light, bright frocks paired with equally bold accessories such as a fuchsia dress cinched at the waist with an equally vivid belt. All too often fall and winter dressing turns into boring, fight the elements survivalism mode. Color blocking is a big trend for summer and carrying this look over to fall will help inject a bit more fun into even the dreariest of winter days.

BIG thanks to my friend Joseph Miner for letting me use these shots he took from his Blackberry. I brought my camera to the event but since I’m a diminutive 5’1 all I snapped where backs of heads. Joey is a whole foot taller than me. Don’t believe me? I’ve got the evidence to prove it.
