What I Wore: Invade NOLA Fashion Week Brunch

Shrimp & grits, and a 25 cent mimosa. yea, as in a quarter.

I love fashion, and I love me some brunch. I also have much love and respect for Justin Shiels, my good friend that runs Invade NOLA. So naturally I was giddy for the NOLA Fashion Week brunch that Invade NOLA hosted at Ste. Marie. Check out my recap of the day on Invade later this month, but for now here’s what I wore to stuff my face with shrimp & grits. Maybe it isn’t lady like to clean your plate, but I’ve never been one to waste good food. Throw in a bloody mary and a well heeled crowd and you have one extra special lazy Sunday.

Normally I’m not a super trendy gal, but I loved the color combo of this high/low sheer dress. Don’t worry, I wore a tank and leggings under it. I’m brave, but I’m not that brave. Plus I tortured y’all enough with my pasty white abs on Mardi Gras Day.

Fashion Week New Orleans Top Designer Competition

With Christmas come and gone and New Year’s Eve, the Superbowl, and Mardi Gras all in the near future who’s thinking about March already? If you’re an aspiring fashion designer, maybe you should.

Fashion Week New Orleans (FW NOLA) is currently accepting applications for their Top Designer Competition, which is part of their fashionable festivities March 21st-25th. Ten designers will be given the opportunity to compete for the title of top designer and a chance to win a 90 day in-store presence at Hemline, a professionally designed website, and a photo shoot of the winning collection. Deadline for applications is January 15th, 2012 and judging by the talent from last year such as Anthony Ryan Auld (of Project Runway fame) you wouldn’t want to miss out on this chance.

Designer: Alicia Zenobia
2011 Top Designer Alicia Zenobia

Alicia Zenobia, winner of the 2011 Top Designer Competition, feels the opportunity afforded her served as a springboard to get her designs into the public eye.

“This was the best opportunity to showcase the uniquely wilder flavor of New Orleans fashion in a comprehensive and well produced fashion event. I was so happy that my out of the box creations were not only understood, but also celebrated by the judges and audience at New Orleans Fashion Week and consequently the press and people of New Orleans, and beyond!”

FW NOLA’s primary objective is to showcase the skillful individuals that comprise the burgeoning New Orleans fashion scene. The Gulf Coast region is known as a destination for food, music, and an entire film industry, so why not fashion? We’ve got the fashion designers, make-up and hair artists, models and the boutiques willing to carry the clothing, so we might as well nurture it and show the world what we have to offer.

Interested applicants should contact Mallory Domingue at mdomingue@fashionweeknola.com

What I Wore to Fashion Week

During the last NOLA Fashion Week I was only able to attend some networking events and a blogger panel, sending Rebekah of 504 Stitches to report on the runway shows in my absence. This year I was fortunate to make it to two of the Friday runway shows, Amanda deLeon and local favorite Jolie & Elizabeth. I was really impressed with how polished the shows were, especially since this was only the second go ’round for the NOLA Fashion week team. I brought along my friend Charle to help me dissect the looks and the photo below is from the Eiffel Society after party, where we refueled on tasty Parmesan fries and let loose on the dance floor. See y’all at the spring shows!

Me: Dress- Rodarte x Target, borrowed from Charle
Belt- Funky Monkey

Amanda deLeon Spring Runway Show

Last Friday night I attended two New Orleans Fashion Week shows at the Ogden Museum, one of which was Louisiana native Amanda deLeon’s Spring 2012 collection. I met the designer back in May and was afforded the chance to see her previous collection up close and personal. Touching the high end textiles and examining the exquisite craftsmanship of her designs was a treat. Amanda utilizes luxurious fabrics such as blanket soft lambskin leather and wispy chiffon, often in the same dress to create a tough yet feminine aesthetic. While spring is admittedly not her favorite season to design for Amanda took her signature looks and incorporated them into a collection that I loved. Egyptian like collars, pin sharp silhouettes and ethereal, almost cocoon like caplets were only surpassed by my favorite dress of the evening, a fringed frock with a delicate sheer veil ensconcing the swishy details. The color palette remained soft in pale metallic gold, sea foam green, and shades of blue that made me lust for a Caribbean beach.

If you didn’t get a chance to go to the show I’d highly recommend checking out Amanda’s website to learn more about her work, follow her on Tumblr, Facebook  or shop at her Etsy store. She’s definitely one Southern fashion designer to keep your eye on!

Watch a dream come true

The Shops at Canal Place and Fashion Week New Orleans are asking you to join them in helping a little girl with leukemia realize her dreams of living the live of a fashion model for one special day. Along with several other Children’s Hospital patients Lameika Downs will have her wish granted and receive a professional fashion photo shoot wearing items from Jean Therapy and a custom made dress from Project Runway participant and LSU alum Anthony Ryan Auld. Tracee Dundas and Mallory Domingue of Fashion Week New Orleans will style the looks and photographer Carlton Mickle will capture the day in photos.

There will be live music, special in-store promotions, fall fashion presentations and a meet and greet with Anthony Ryan Auld followed by a Q&A session.  So come out this Thursday from 5-7pm to celebrate One Haute Night.

Fashion’s Night Out in New Orleans

Fashion’s Night Out was this Thursday at Saks Fifth Avenue and I was thrilled that Slow Southern Style was featured in the blogger lounge. The night was filled with DJs on all three floors, a fun fashion scavenger hunt, running into familiar faces, drooling over beautiful clothes, and lots of champagne.

Can I be honest with y’all here? I definitely pulled this outfit together in haste. The only reason I wore these loafers is because I didn’t have time to paint my toenails, one of the downfalls of only possessing open toe heels.

Chanel of Chanel Craves is without a doubt one of my favorite Southern Fashion Bloggers. She’s always so perfectly put together, pretty, and she laughs at my dumb jokes. Her boyfriend looked equally well put together as well!

 Speaking of Chanel….

Samantha from Feet First! Samantha did a guest post on Slow Southern Style so it was a real pleasure to finally meet her in person. This picture is a hoot, note that she is squatting and I’m standing on tip toes and she is still taller than me.

I finally met cutie pie Dalton of the Warehouse District and his mom. They were so nice!

Plenty of Marc Jacobs to ogle

Sweet Slow Southern Style reader Kasimu came out to Saks after hearing me talk about it on Twitter AND he was the best dressed gentleman of the night. I just love a guy that can sport a bow tie and a pocket square!

Big thanks to all of my friends that came to hang out, I had a blast chatting with y’all and hope to see each and every one of you again soon. For additional pictures from the evening be sure to check out the Facebook page.
