Objects of Adornment Opening Night

Copper, feathers, and fur from Lacey Dupre

I can’t believe how great opening night for Objects of Adornment went! Since its inception two years ago Slow Southern Style has been all about showcasing Southern based designers and I was thrilled with the opportunity to share four of my favorites in an intimate setting.

While the internet is the easiest, fastest way to discover fresh talent it is an entirely different experience seeing the work in person. We had every aesthetic represented, from Alicia Zenobia’s experimental hair dresses, classic style courtesy of Ben Azevedo’s bow ties, fanciful headpieces from Kaci Thomassie and swamp art thanks to Lacey Dupre’s nutria and bone necklaces.

I want to give massive amounts of thanks to Du Mois Gallery for helping me bring a little fashion to Freret Street, Lazy Magnolia for providing the beer, and the mannequins on loan from Armoire Boutique, Buffalo Exchange, Denise Lyons, Gera Kirkland, and Rachel Elizabeth Adams.

There are tons of photos from the evening on the Slow Southern Style Facebook page so make sure to check those out as well! And don’t forget that Objects of Adornment will be at Du Mois Gallery now through the end of October. All artwork on Freret Street is tax free for an extra incentive to add a wearable work of art to your collection, handmade right here in Louisiana.

Southern Street Style: Freret Street Friday Night Fight

This week is a different sort of street style, Freret Street style that is. Every month I look forward to Freret Street Gym’s Friday Night Fights. I’d like to admit that while I could probably hold my own in a fight (I once fended off a purse snatcher in the French Quarter) I’ve never been in a fist fight in my life. So while I’m clueless about boxing Friday Night Fights is probably the coolest, weirdest, funnest, and most unique way to spend your weekend. Besides the boxing there are local rappers, drag queen queen performances, dance troupes, and whatever else they figure is entertainment. A couple of the Freret Street restaurants serve up things like burgers, fish tacos, red beans, and of course cold beer.

The images below were shot by Sabree Hill. Read more about this monthly event on Uptown Messenger and I’ll see y’all at the next one!

Southern Street Style: Seen at Freret Market

Learn more about Kate and wear to buy what she makes after the break.

I ran into Kate McNee at the June Freret Market. While everyone was wilting in the hot weather she really stood out in her neon vintage Hawaiian style dress. Kate makes these crazy good fascinators and tiny hats. I love how festive these little pieces of art are, perfect for anything from a quirky cocktail party or even a wedding. What I Wore- Birds On The Brain

I used to be quite the adventurous dresser. If y’all could see the crazy things I wore in high school you’d laugh and that’s okay because I thought most of it was funny too. I remember my favorite shoes well. I bought them in Belle Promenade mall (ain’t dere no more) and the year was, oh never mind the year they were baby powder blue and had the same sheen as a 1950s diner booth. Oh yea did I mention the stacked wooden heel with white trim? Jeffrey Campbell could probably sell them now and ladies would eat them up for breakfast, or brunch since this is a New Orleans based blog. If anyone from Jeffrey Campbell shoes wants to hit me up I’ll gladly describe them to you. I’ll even let y’all call them “The Christy.”

Anyway.

As a teenager growing up in the South back in the 90’s (there I said it) most of my classmates were pretty conservative and all I wanted to do was rebel and wear outrageous things for the sake of being different. I dress downright dowdy compared to the strange wardrobe choices I made in the springtime of my life. However sometimes you have to live a little and have fun, hence this little friend that I picked up at Freret Market last weekend.

Click through to see the rest of the outfit.

The trick to wearing a whimsical outfit is keeping the entire getup in sync. Here I kept the color palette completely the same throughout with mint green and bright pink so everything tied in and made sense vs. making a hot mess. You can’t just throw on something silly with a pair of jeans otherwise it will look, well silly instead of fun.

Look I even sort of match my new back patio decorations! Our “outdoor dining room” is getting a complete overhaul, complete with a fountain and pond as soon as we get around to it.

What We Wore- Fun On Freret Street

It goes without saying that there is always something to do in New Orleans. Even if you are just in town for the weekend it is easy to trawl through the myriad of NOLA websites and find recommendations to answer the eternal question “What’s going on this weekend?” However some of the best events aren’t always in the most obvious places.

On May 14th I had the pleasure of attending the first ever Freret Street art crawl. I’m a big supporter of this burgeoning corridor and in addition to the galleries and studios it features a slew of established and soon to be open restaurants, a bike shop, skate shop, and even has two yoga studios and two distinctly different gyms. There is also the Freret Market in addition to a bigger annual festival.

The art crawl was hosted at three venues, Du Mois, Nelson + Little, and Brottworks. We hit up each one with a stop at Dat Dog for my favorite alligator sausage and a quick drink to go at the Box Office before heading over to hear a live band performing at a benefit.

I’ve been to Du Mois a number of times and I love that they feature artists on both a local and national level. Nelson + Little and Brottworks studios aren’t typically open to the public so it was a treat getting to meet the artists and chat with them about their work. To check out the Nelson + Little jewelry that was on display click here. Sis and I picked up some great pieces at really affordable prices that will be featured in a future post for sure.

On to the pictures!

I need to get my hair in check ASAP. Humidity does weird things, no matter how hard I try my hair looks about as lifeless as my front yard does with this lack of rain.
Isn’t my little sister cute? Emphasis on little, she is under 5’0. Don’t kill me for saying that! Love ya!
