Museum Quality

The Historic New Orleans Collection is a “museum, research center, and publisher dedicated to the study and preservation of the history and culture of New Orleans and the Gulf South region”.

They also happen to stock some very southern inspired jewelry and accessories in their shop.

Personally my favorite jewelry pays homage to nature and the things I adore. Leaves make for great bijoux and both these pieces from local artist India Stewart  are texturally interesting.

ELEPHANT PIN LRG SILVER Elephant ear leaf pin by India Stewart

BANANA LEAF FISHHOOK EARRING VERMEIL Banana Leaf earrings
The leaves remind me of my Mignon Faget banana leaf earrings.

These handbags are literally wearable art. Reproductions of Edgar Degas and John James Audubon prints make for a unique accessory.

ART BAG- Audubon Reddish Egret LG               ART BAG SMALL AMERICAN GOLDFINCH

The museum also stocks Pelican Coast neckware. The ties and bowties are made of 100% silk and 20% of the proceeds from their Coastal Collection is donated to the America’s Wetland Foundation. These funds help raise awareness of supporting and saving coastal Louisiana, which is more important than ever.

MINT JULEP TIE RED Mint julep tie SHRIMP BOW TIE Pink Shrimp bow tie

All of these items are available for purchase online or better yet make the trip to the French Quarter and tour the museum and its historic buildings

Ensign me up

Magazine St.Oak St. and Maple St.   These names conjure up great restaurants and great shopping. Freret St.? Pffft! There is nary a mention of this once bustling area.  I’ve always loved rooting for the underdog and with news of a new restaurant and retail space slated to open spring 2011 this area is sure to be not an underdog but a top contender in the near future.

There are a handful of businesses and bars that are surviving (and thriving) on this once famed corridor. One retail establishment that is doing it right is Ensign. This boutique touts itself as an art/skate/clothing store and it seems to be popular with the neighbors. While they primarily carry mostly men’s clothing there is a small selection of women’s clothing and accessories as well.

Since it is a skate shop their brands reflect that. Diamond Supply Co., Nikita, The Hundreds,Brixton, and Mishka are just a few brands that you’ll find here.

Keep up to date with their stock via Twitter or Facebook. Scott Simon of I Heart NOLA has some great pictures on his blog as well. Or better yet, stop by the store and show some support.

Thanks to owner Caleb Pulver for supplying me with the pictures!

men's shoes show and tell

Show & Tell

This week’s Show & Tell comes from one of my best friends. He’s not from the south but has plenty of style so we’ll let that slide. Justin probably has THE best taste in clothes out of anyone I know. So without further adieu I present to y’all a sampling of Justin’s amazing shoe collection.

Greetings from the sunny southwest! So I figured I would get in on the show and tell Saturday with two of my current favorite pairs of shoes (as of last inventory I’m up to 20 pairs so it is hard to choose favorites).

The first pair are some Prada brogues I picked up at the Phoenix Buffalo Exchange about 5 years ago. I think my favorite thing about them is that they’re completely classic and subtle, but also full of character and amazingly versatile.

The second pair are a recent find at a Phoenix shopping gem. They’re Wolverine 1000 mile premium boots that I was happy to pay a mere $40.00 for. I had been on the hunt for lace up boots for some time and these were more than I could have hoped for. Even more than the great classic style and sturdy construction (they’ll last forever), I’m happy to have picked them up in an already gently worn condition. It would have taken longer than I’d like to take to get that great patina and scraping on them myself and now I don’t have to feel so bad when I add my own scrapes to them.

These two pairs may not always be in my regular rotation, and there may be times they find themselves pushed to the dark corners of my closet, waiting to be brought out and dusted off again. I’m sure they’ll drift in and out of favor over time, and that’s the best thing about shoes that are impeccably constructed and classically styled. Be good to them and they’ll last you a lifetime.

Remember if you have something special in your closet, be it your maw maw’s 1950’s prom dress or your latest Macy’s shopping spree we want to see it! E-mail me at nolagurl{at}gmail{com}.

men's preppy shoes

Not a ship in sight

Ahhhh the boat shoe. Stumble into any college bar in the South and you’re bound to see at least a few guys (and more frequently girls) sporting this preppy staple. When I lived a block behind a popular college hangout in the Garden District I started a game called “boat shoe count”. I’d see no less than 12 khaki clad guys bustin’ out the Sperry’s.

Lately magazines have been showing the shoes as new “trends” but here below the Mason-Dixon line we’re so far behind we’re ahead. Just because you’ve been wearing the same brand or style of shoe since, well since your mom picked them out for you doesn’t mean you are limited in your options. Designers are offering up new twists on this old classic.

When buying classics always invest in the best quality you can afford. These blue J Shoes from Shoefty are made of supple leather that will only look better with age.

The bright color way on these Jack Purcells, available at Urban Outfitters, are sure to make these conservative slip ons a little more fun.

Jack Purcell Orange Boat Shoe
Looking for something sleeker? The To Boot New York nubuck versions, available at Saks, are a less clunky option that will pair well with shorts.

Of course women have a far broader range of options when it comes to footwear.

No boat shoe conversation would be complete without a Sperry Topsider mention. The Sperry Freeports, available at Zappos, are more ballet flat, less boat shoe.

These Sperry’s are the classic shape but updated with metallic gold so they pack in some fun yet maintain their roots.

Women's Authentic Original Metallic Boat Shoe
Not sold on them yet? Payless has viable options that won’t break the bank.

FYI: This post comes by special request from a certain Northshore frat boy I know. ;P

men's spring

Six picks for spring

Aside from a few brief cold moments spring is officially here in the south. Warmer weather and a perfect breeze brings plenty of outside activities such as crawfish boils, picnics, trips to the zoo, or just a leisurely bike ride. Enjoy this great weather while you can until summer creeps up and slaps us with heavy rain and high humidity. So finish packing away your coats and freshen up your wardrobe with my six picks for spring.

Spring is all about patterns but not necessarily in pastels. This skirt from Francesca’s would  satisfy my repetitious craving.

The Trap This grey dress from Hemline is just begging for some brightly colored accessories, such as a bold statement necklace.

Looking for the perfect al fresco dining dress?  This rich purple dress with embroidery from Lady Soho fits the bill.

My next three picks are for the men of Slow Southern Style. I can’t forget about y’all!

There is something so right about chambray. It gets better with each washing and lets you step away from the iron in warm months. This classic look at Shoefty gets a small update via the red button in the middle. Pair it with white linen or khaki and you’re set.

If your shirt requires cuff links why not have some fun with this floral pair from Style Lab?

These shorts from Banana Republic are relaxed yet dressy enough to wear them without feeling sloppy.

Style Profile

The men of the south are true peacocks and my goal for this site is to feature individuals with a real sense of personal style.
I don’t get a chance to snap pictures often, much less of total strangers but I’m  attempting a semi regular men’s post and naturally my first subject matter is my husband.
I really lucked out and found a guy who needs little to no help dressing himself. He’s a Yankee but I usually don’t hold that against him. So without further ado I officially introduce you to my partner and best friend.
Name: Thomas
Occupation: Mental health clinical director and licensed counselor
Origin: Upstate New York, Ohio
Years in New Orleans: 6 total – 5 years Pre-K and currently 1 year back
Favorite labels: Hugo Boss, Ben Sherman, Banana Republic, Citizens of Humanity, John Fluevog, Cole Haan, Bacco Bucci
Style: Sophisticated with a dash of fun
Favorite item(s): A well edited shoe collection
A better picture of the shoes from the website he purchased them from.
Michael (Black)
Outfit details:
Shirt: Ben Sherman tee, purchased at Funky Monkey
Jeans: Overdyed black Huf jeans, purchased at Shoefty
Shoes: Black on black wingtip Michael shoes from John Fluevog
As usual pardon the grainy photo. I need to stop taking photos at night and actually learn how to use my camera!
