What I Wore: White Linen Night

I tend to hibernate in the summer, which means a lot of  missed social events on account of the sweltering heat and/or rainstorms. This past Saturday, I decided to get off my lazy ass and head downtown for White Linen Night, an annual art event. As the name suggests, patrons don white clothing while traipsing through art galleries.  I dressed the part by wearing a white button down with a blush chiffon bottom, paired with my favorite pair of cream colored jeans. I fit right in, but looked a little more creative than just buying a white linen dress and calling it a day. Wearing jeans to an outdoor event in August? Not the smartest idea, but at least I complied with the dress code- sort of.

What I Wore: Red Lips Red Skirt Blue Shirt

Whenever I get bored of my old favorites, I like to mix them up with new pieces. Mind blowing concept, right? I’ve owned this chambray button down for two years, and I’ve pretty much styled it every way I can. Canadian tuxedo, tucked into a skirt, thrown on with hiking pants, you’d think I’ve almost milked this baby dry. I was trying to put a more personal spin on this trendy red polka dot skirt (last seen here), and a subtly patriotic color palette came together. I like that the skirt has an unexpected asymmetrical hem, which gives some oomph to an otherwise straightforward outfit. Throw on some masculine accessories and my overwhelming feminine charm balances itself out. Commence eye rolling right about…now.

What I Wore: Polka dots and peter pan collars

As much fun as it is helping other people get dressed, sometimes it’s equally fun having someone help me get dolled up. Meg, the feisty owner of Abeille NOLA, offered to put together this outfit for me from her store. All of the pieces come together to form a cohesive look that is decidedly “me”. Cuff bracelet? Yea, I own a few. High waisted skirt? I practically live in ’em. I’m already scheming up ways to break apart this baby and mix everything up with what I already own.
Swing by Abeille and tell ’em Slow Southern Style sent ya. Also be sure to check out their boutique within a boutique- Shoeffle has set up it’s own soleful shop in the back room, offering up everything from practical sandals, comfy wedges, and sky high heels.

Tybee Island: Paradise in Georgia

Given how much I love the beach, I don’t go nearly as much as I should. The closest beaches to New Orleans aren’t crystalline waters and sugary white sand- you have to drive past Mississippi to get to the good stuff. When I went to Savannah last weekend, my sister and I loaded up the car with newly purchased beach chairs, a cooler, and plenty of SPF 45 sunblock and headed to Tybee Island. A quick 20 minutes from her apartment, it was just what I needed to really feel like I was on vacation. We even had a dolphin sighting, and managed not to lose our sunglasses in the surf when the waves rolled in.

Summer Drinks: Cool Off With A Cold One

Whether you’re imbibing with a local craft beer, homemade strawberry lemonade, or kicking back with a mint julep at your favorite upscale bar, summertime calls for cold drinks. Getting a frosty beverage isn’t just a way to quench your thirst- it’s a real treat when temperatures start to soar. Here are a few favorites from some friends of Slow Southern Style, both with and without alcohol. Leave your own favorite cold ones below in the comments too!

Wine at Martinique Bistro– New Orleans, LA

LVF: Lately the most refreshing drink I’ve been ordering up has been pretty simple, but not necessarily available everywhere in town (think “mixologists” instead of dive bars…). It relies on Domaine de Canton’s Ginger Liquer, on (minimal) rocks with a splash of soda and lime juice. Refreshing, tropical, with just a hint of spice- just we like it in the South. Ladies, it’s clear and deliciously light for even those with a hummingbird’s tolerance; gentlemen, what a better way to showcase your fine spirits connoisseurship, and since it’s distilled from ginger, who knows, you *may* be reaping some health benefits too.

Vintage Angeline not a cocktail but I LOVE that skinny water. Lemon, mint and ginger in water. Fix 1 pitcher a day sometimes and keep in fridge.

Christy: Cold brew coffee! If you have a french press coffee pot, it’s as easy as grinding beans. Instead of using hot water, use cold to lukewarm and let sit for 8-12 hours. In the morning you’ll have a strong cup of joe that’s perfect over ice.

@fashion_teaStrawberry lemonade with vodka… Mmm.

Ash in FashionPlum Street Snowballs! (Preferably of the boozy variety.)

Kelli GrengsMarkham Vineyards Sauvignon Blanc! Because Markham loves Freret Street!

Roll and Tumble Press: White Sangria- pineapple, peaches, cantaloupe soaked in 2 cups of Cointreau. Top with a bottle of crisp white wine. I used Sauvignon Blanc, two cups club soda and a package of fresh mint. Serve in glassses with ice! So good and potent!

Jean-Paul Villere:  duh – cheap tequila and oj, juuusssstttt so

Amy Bauer Gabriel :  Homemade Ginger Limeade at Cafe Rose Nicaud. SO good–spiked or not spiked:)

Milky Way & Caramel Martinis at Lulu’s Chocolate Bar- Savannah, GA

What I Wore: Sippin’ In Seersucker

Dress- Imagine Scarf- Swap Boutique
Earrings- Armoire
Bangle bracelet- c/o In Pink
Clutch Banana Republic, Belt American Apparel, Heels DKNY Collection all via Buffalo Exchange

My husband- he put together his outfit himself, no help from me!

Sippin’ In Seersucker was this past Friday, and I couldn’t have had more fun. If you’ve never been, read all about it  on  my weekly Uptown Messenger column.  Seersucker is the ubiquitous summer fabric of the South, and it was a treat witnessing so many people decked out in puckered stripes.  Aside from the mint juleps, sazeracs, and delicious food from local restaurants, the people watching was definitely the highlight of the evening.

Poor judgement on my part meant that I didn’t take as many photos as I should have. Juggling a clutch, a drink, and food while walking around was a challenge for sure. However I did manage to snap a few shots- to see some photos of friends that went visit the Slow Southern Style Facebook page.

It’s the details that help stand out from the standards

Another Instagram shot- shrimp (tattoo) and seersucker- follow me  I’m slowsouthernstyle. Duh.

What I Wore: Casual Cool

It’s almost summer, and having an arsenal of comfortable clothes is key to getting through festival season and making it to Fall. I usually live in tank tops, but this summer I’m switching to lightweight button downs to keep the sun off my arms, and stay casual and cool. Well, I’m not cool by any stretch, but I do like to wear clothes that breathe. I shared some tips on my weekly Uptown Messenger article for dressing for festivals, but the same tips apply all season long.

Stylin’ in the Rain

Being a southern girl comes with many charms. Some good… adorable accents, sweet tea, front porches, seersucker. Some bad… intolerable heat, humidity, and RAIN! Growing up in the south you just learn to expect your daily afternoon shower. Lately the rain has been more persistent than ever, going beyond the usual light shower into full fledged storms, almost every day! What’s a fashionable girl to do? I can’t bear the thought of an amazing outfit getting wet… or even having to cover it up with some clunky, chunky, plastic jacket. Fortunately the fashion gods have taken heed to address the situation and there are adorable jackets, boots and even fashionable umbrellas to take the rain by storm.

I love that rain jackets come in all shapes, styles and colors. I fell in love with these two from Anthropologie partly because of the great colors, but mainly the lining! How fun and quirky.. they’re sure to brighten any day up. Any of these choices would be a great start to a rainy day look!

It’s weird to say there might be rain boot trends, but there are! My favorite trend right now are rain booties! I’m not sure how much protection the ankle boots would provide in a heavy storm, but for your typical summer shower, they’re perfect! What drew me to some of these other pairs were the details like studs and bows, fabulous lacing, great patterns and colors that pop!

Just because you need your clothing to be functional, doesn’t mean that it can’t be stylish! I can’t wait until these daily deluges subside, but until they do, I’ll be rockin’ my all weather duds.

What I Wore- Amelie G MidSummer Party

Here in the South a lot of us practice a reverse hibernation. Instead of snow days we get intense rain and heat but unfortunately those aren’t reasons to get to stay home from work. Instead most of our social calenders are lightened and indulging in air conditioning becomes top priority. I did however find a reason to get dressed up last night thanks to the Amelie G Midsummer Jet Set Party at the Ogden Museum.

Amelie G is a New Orleans fashion magazine that recently gained a national distribution at Barnes & Noble and Hastings and can be purchased at other places around town. They have monthly online magazines and a quarterly print edition. This was my first time attending one of their events and it was sort of a who’s who in the small yet growing New Orleans fashion scene. I had fun running into old friends and meeting new ones.
I didn’t take as many photos as I would have liked, which is normally the case. I usually end up enjoying myself and forget to snap some shots. You can check out the rest of the photos by clicking here.
