Gulfport Getaway

Crawfish nachos from the Ole Biloxi Fillin’ Station

Sometimes you just have to get away, even if it means getting a hotel room for one night. So away we went to Gulfport and Biloxi for a random Wednesday night a few weeks ago to enjoy a little Gulf Coast breeze, a spacious room at the Island View Casino Resort, and big winnings. We got ballsy during our Gulfport getaway and decided to upgrade from the penny slots to the quarter machines and won back our spending money and enough to pay off the entire trip plus some. Not too shabby for some amateur gamblers, no?

What I Wore: A Yankee Wedding

This past year I’ve been doing quite a bit of writing for New Orleans Bride Magazine*, so it was fitting to attend a wedding while I’m knee deep in interviews with different businesses around town.

I’ve never been to Rome, NY and with a weather forecast of highs in the 70s and lows in the 40s I packed a mish mosh of summer and winter weight fabrics. Not wanting to overdress for an intimate rural ceremony, I revisited a favorite dress I wore for a feature in Times-Picayune’s Wish. I was a bit thinner the last go ’round- a not so firm reminder (see what I did there) I need to hit up the gym.

Rue Belle sent over these beautiful gold earrings and I’ve been wearing them nonstop. I love lightweight over sized danglers- there’s nothing worse than having achy earlobes at the end of the day.

Lazy Days of Summer

monogram necklace from Abeille NOLA p.s. Xty- short for Christy since my initials CLL are redundant

This it it y’all. September is nearly upon us and the lazy days of summer have been hitting me hard. Maybe it’s the biblical amount of rain we’ve had, coupled with intense heat and humidity but I’ve been savoring my downtime. Weekends have been spent watching documentaries, hanging out with friends, and catching up on forgotten issues of National Geographic. September brings a road trip, a wedding, and preliminary plans for Halloween costumes. Yea, that’ll be here before you know it.

What I Wore: Black And Tan

While summer is supposedly winding down and the school year is upon us, we’ve still got two or three months of nasty hot weather ahead. I’ve been wearing a lot of neutrals these past weeks, perhaps in a subconscious effort to kick start fall. This is the time of year I start to loathe everything I own. Is it just me, or do you feel like you’ve been wearing the same warm weather staples since….scratch that, we didn’t get a winter this year.

This khaki skirt has seen me through the entire summer, and I’m sure I’ll continue to wear it  with a sweater and tights when the temperature hopefully drops. It also makes an appearance on the Oxford American website via Parish Chic.

What I Wore: Red Lips Red Skirt Blue Shirt

Whenever I get bored of my old favorites, I like to mix them up with new pieces. Mind blowing concept, right? I’ve owned this chambray button down for two years, and I’ve pretty much styled it every way I can. Canadian tuxedo, tucked into a skirt, thrown on with hiking pants, you’d think I’ve almost milked this baby dry. I was trying to put a more personal spin on this trendy red polka dot skirt (last seen here), and a subtly patriotic color palette came together. I like that the skirt has an unexpected asymmetrical hem, which gives some oomph to an otherwise straightforward outfit. Throw on some masculine accessories and my overwhelming feminine charm balances itself out. Commence eye rolling right about…now.

Essence Fest Street Style

Essence Music Festival is held July 4th weekend every year right here in New Orleans. It’s one of the biggest music festivals the city hosts and the streets turn into impromptu fashion shows. Charle’ Washington and I hit the pavement, hotel bars, and pop up shops to bring y’all the style. Check out our findings and learn more about the fest on the Buffalo Exchange blog and check out more photos on Facebook. Here’s what we wore to brave the heat.

What I Wore: Polka dots and peter pan collars

As much fun as it is helping other people get dressed, sometimes it’s equally fun having someone help me get dolled up. Meg, the feisty owner of Abeille NOLA, offered to put together this outfit for me from her store. All of the pieces come together to form a cohesive look that is decidedly “me”. Cuff bracelet? Yea, I own a few. High waisted skirt? I practically live in ’em. I’m already scheming up ways to break apart this baby and mix everything up with what I already own.
Swing by Abeille and tell ’em Slow Southern Style sent ya. Also be sure to check out their boutique within a boutique- Shoeffle has set up it’s own soleful shop in the back room, offering up everything from practical sandals, comfy wedges, and sky high heels.

What I Wore: Saturday Brunch on Magazine Street

Summertime humidity, too damn hot, I’m miserable, only wear natural fabrics,  blah blah blah. All I do from now until October is bitch about the heat and bad hair days. So anything that forces me to get out of the air conditioned house is a welcome excuse, especially if food and good company are involved. My friend Dorothy and I were invited to the grand opening of Delta Angel, a new restaurant inside the St. Vincent Guest House. The restaurant is quirky with  healthier options and plenty of vegetarian fare, which is a rarity in New Orleans.  Check them out for breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

What We Wore: A Night Out in Savannah

Savannah is definitely a laid back city, even more than New Orleans. For my last night in town, my sister and I had dinner at Jazz’d Tapas followed up with some truly decadent dessert at Lulu’s Chocolate Bar. Even though we could have fit right in wearing jeans and a t-shirt, exerting a little extra effort always helps a night out feel a bit more special. Although there was nothing special about waking up at 4:30 am for my flight back home. What was I thinking when I booked that?
