Slow Southern News

For all my lovely southern gals I created Southern Fashion Bloggers, a place where y’all can interact with other bloggers below the Mason-Dixon line. It is still brand new but will hopefully serve as a meaningful place to interact. Anyone can join, including businesses that are looking to collaborate with bloggers to promote their shops and products.

Fashion designer and Louisiana native Jodi Arnold will be putting on a fashion show Thursday, September 30th at the Crown Plaza in Baton Rouge.

The Historic New Orleans Collection is hosting  Mignon Faget: A Life in Art and Design. The exhibition will run September 22, 2010 to January 2, 2011.

Elise Sonnier of Dirty Rice Designs is holding jewelry making classes at the Episcopal School of Acadiana in  Broussard, LA. Each two hour class will include using wire and beads to create a variety of styles. For more information, including the class schedule, visit her Facebook event page.

The Al Copeland Foundation presents the “Hi-Speed Fashion Show”,  a fundraiser for cancer research. The event takes place Friday, September 17th at 6:30pm at Generations Hall.  Tickets start at $25 and include a runway show, food and drinks plus a silent auction. Appearances by Saints players and local personalities round out the festivities.

The Guitar Bar will be hosting a trunk show for Miss Malaprop to show case the exclusive handmade fleur-de-lis guitar straps that she made for their shop. The show is on Saturday, September 4th from noon-9:00pm.

Jolie & Elizabeth is having a trunk show this Thursday, August 26th from 2:00pm-9:00pm  at Fair Folks & a Goat – NOLA to showcase  their Fall 2010 Collection. Attendees can enter the raffle to win Jolie and Elizabeth merchandise and gift cards and enjoy New Orleans Rum cocktails.


Encore shop is having a summer clearance sale August 24th-28th. All sales from this nonprofit shop benefit the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra.

  • Declare your love of the ultimate southern belle movie by donating to the University of Texas at Austin’s Gone with the Wind 2014 exhibition.  Many of the infamous dresses that Scarlett O’ Hara wore are in disrepair and can not be displayed until funds are raised to restore them back to their former grandeur.
  • Touro Infirmary is hosting a “Look Good, Feel Better” event for women undergoing cancer treatment. On Thursday, August 19th volunteer cosmetologists will be on hand from noon-2pm to help patients cope with appearance related side effects in order to help boost self esteem and regain confidence.   • Love perfume? The New Orleans Museum of Art is exhibiting “Scents and Sensibility”. Opening night is tonight from 6-8pm. 


“Join NOMA members and guests as they celebrate the opening of “Scents and Sensibility,” an exhibition showcasing 125 objects covering the history of the scent bottle from its ancient origins to the present day.

From 6-8 p.m., Hove Parfumeurs will demonstrate how their luxury French Quarter boutique produces unique scents using indigenous Creole materials. 

A full cash bar featuring frozen “Chanel cosmos” will be available in honor of Chanel, Givency, Ballenciaga, Dior, and other couturiers highlighted within the exhibit. Brennan’s Courtyard Cafe will remain open as well, offering a selection of pastries, soups and coffee.
