What I Wore- Amelie G MidSummer Party

Here in the South a lot of us practice a reverse hibernation. Instead of snow days we get intense rain and heat but unfortunately those aren’t reasons to get to stay home from work. Instead most of our social calenders are lightened and indulging in air conditioning becomes top priority. I did however find a reason to get dressed up last night thanks to the Amelie G Midsummer Jet Set Party at the Ogden Museum.

Amelie G is a New Orleans fashion magazine that recently gained a national distribution at Barnes & Noble and Hastings and can be purchased at other places around town. They have monthly online magazines and a quarterly print edition. This was my first time attending one of their events and it was sort of a who’s who in the small yet growing New Orleans fashion scene. I had fun running into old friends and meeting new ones.
I didn’t take as many photos as I would have liked, which is normally the case. I usually end up enjoying myself and forget to snap some shots. You can check out the rest of the photos by clicking here.

What I Wore: Horsin’ around

I like to get out of town as often as I can, which unfortunately isn’t as much as I’d like. My husband and I recently took a trip to Bush, Louisiana to a little place called Splendor Farms. For a complete recap of our adventures at the farm read my recap at the excellent website NO Adventure and check out the full set of photos on my Facebook page. Even though we only stayed one night we came back to New Orleans completely refreshed.

All I’ve got for y’all today is a goat and what I wore. It’s important not to look like a fashion victim when petting goats and baby horses so I kept it simple with a tank top, shorts and sandals. Seriously, don’t overdue it; you can’t become one with nature wearing stilettos and a mini skirt. Y’all can check out some of my previous adventures by clicking here.

What I Wore- Citrus in the Summer

During the summer I’m more prone to wearing loose, light clothing to help keep cool, or rather less miserable in this heat and humidity. Saturdays are my only day off with my husband so normally we sleep in and I’ll make coffee and breakfast when we roll out of bed. And when I say we I mean two cats, a dog, and two humans. It’s a mammal party every morning!

This outfit saw me through an early afternoon meeting with Ben of NOLA Bow Ties and a comedy act in the evening. If you like to laugh (and if you don’t well you are probably an awful person) consider helping Hell Yes Fest to get going in New Orleans.

My feet are festive, to say the least. Sometimes people think my tattoos are socks. I’d never wear clashing patterns, unless I can’t avoid it. D’oh!

What I Wore- When Neutrals Attack

Ask me a few years ago if I’d ever wear white jeans and my response would have been “never in a million years.” Not only could I not keep white jeans pristine but I’d imagine my legs would look like pearly little sausages. So I’m not quite sure what attracted me to these cream colored skinny jeans but I can’t stop wearing them despite the heat. I’ve also never been huge on taupe but lately I can’t get enough of it. I picked up this Sanctuary t-shirt from United Apparel Liquidators for a steal. The shirt was originally $85 and I got it for a measly $25.  My friend Dorothy also loves getting quality clothes at a bargain and has the tank top version.

The best part about these Citizens of Humanity is that I bought them already distressed so if I happen to stain them it will only add to the charm.
Y’all like how I injected some words on top of the next picture to distract from the blurry hands and my rain barrel in the background? There’s 55 gallons of unfiltered acid rain sitting in there. Thirsty?

What I Wore: Wish for a sneak peek

I’m rather excited to give y’all a sneak peek of what I will be wearing for a bloggers feature in the Times Picayune! Every month the newspaper puts out a monthly style magazine Wish and I’m thrilled to be featured in it for a second time! Along with five other bloggers I will be sharing my must have summer items and I can’t wait to see the final product in July.

Granted the feature will have better lighting and I will actually be wearing heels but I wanted to show off the great dress that I picked for my portrait. Pardon the terrible night lighting, after my fun professional photo shoot on Magazine Street the husband and I decided to dine at Freret Street’s newest restaurant, Ancora, then we headed downtown to enjoy a nightcap at Bar Tonique followed by meeting a friend at the Apple Barrel on Frenchman Street.
Check out the spread by picking up the July Wish the Friday after July 4th or by viewing it online.

What I Wore- Summer in the South

In the summer time it is so hard to look presentable when the humidity and the temperature are battling it out for who has the highest digits. Suddenly a tank top and shorts seems like the only viable option, and even a leather sandal seems too heavy. Ladies and gents, summer in the south is a constant battle, and the only way to win is by stocking your closet with cotton and linen pieces that will help see you through to Fall.

I bought this 100% linen dress but needed to find a slip to go under it since it is completely sheer. I might be a little daring, but I’m not THAT daring. The sherbet slip is a fun alternative to a neutral underpinning and I like how it changes up the hemline of the dress. It’s also amazing how good my hair looked on this day. My big secret? I showered then slept on it then ran a pick through it to get the knots out. So why is it when I actually try to fix my hair that I can’t achieve perfectly wavy tresses?

What I Wore- Birds On The Brain

I used to be quite the adventurous dresser. If y’all could see the crazy things I wore in high school you’d laugh and that’s okay because I thought most of it was funny too. I remember my favorite shoes well. I bought them in Belle Promenade mall (ain’t dere no more) and the year was, oh never mind the year they were baby powder blue and had the same sheen as a 1950s diner booth. Oh yea did I mention the stacked wooden heel with white trim? Jeffrey Campbell could probably sell them now and ladies would eat them up for breakfast, or brunch since this is a New Orleans based blog. If anyone from Jeffrey Campbell shoes wants to hit me up I’ll gladly describe them to you. I’ll even let y’all call them “The Christy.”

Anyway.

As a teenager growing up in the South back in the 90’s (there I said it) most of my classmates were pretty conservative and all I wanted to do was rebel and wear outrageous things for the sake of being different. I dress downright dowdy compared to the strange wardrobe choices I made in the springtime of my life. However sometimes you have to live a little and have fun, hence this little friend that I picked up at Freret Market last weekend.

Click through to see the rest of the outfit.

The trick to wearing a whimsical outfit is keeping the entire getup in sync. Here I kept the color palette completely the same throughout with mint green and bright pink so everything tied in and made sense vs. making a hot mess. You can’t just throw on something silly with a pair of jeans otherwise it will look, well silly instead of fun.

Look I even sort of match my new back patio decorations! Our “outdoor dining room” is getting a complete overhaul, complete with a fountain and pond as soon as we get around to it.

Hold That Tiger: Long skirts are my new favorites

I have a habit of finding a silhouette that I like then running it into the ground. Last summer all I wanted to wear were short skirts and fitted tops, to the point that this year I’m done with them. I’ve kept my favorites and will wear them again but my main shopping objective is filling in the gaps and attempting to make what I wear less boring, at least to me.

I went thrifting  for the first time in ages and happily stumbled upon this tank top and skirt. Animal prints are a big trend this season, probably thanks to Miu Miu’s spring 2010 collection of swallow printed shoes and cat print dresses. Local favorite Lia Molly also did capuchin monkeys for her spring 2011 sweaters.

So the new animal print is less zebra and leopard spots, more the animals themselves. Considering I basically have a mini zoo (and I volunteered at the zoo years ago!) I have no qualms with embracing this trend.
The funny thing about purchasing items at a thrift store is that it opens your mind to wearing brands from stores that you’d never shop at. When it comes down to it finding a great fitting piece of clothing is the ultimate goal, labels aside. Just wear what you like, don’t worry about what that little tag says, no one is going to see it anyway.

What I Wore- Southern Fashion Bloggers Meetup

The past three Saturdays in a row have been great fun for me. From a stroll in historical gardens, to a day in the French Quarter followed by a trek down Freret Street I’ve been making it a point to get out and enjoy some sunshine before the heat and humidity become unbearable which will be any minute now.

A few of the ladies from the Southern Fashion Bloggers got together three weeks ago for a Fashionable Frolic through Longue Vue, a historical home and gardens located in Old Metairie. The weather was perfect and it was really a good excuse for an all girls get together with gorgeous weather.

This was a much more laid back outing than our first get together at the Windsor Court so I didn’t want to come across as overdressed this go ’round. A coral colored t-shirt with a spring worthy skirt was the perfect outfit for a most perfect day.
Look y’all Leslie of UNMADE, NOLA Eats, Eatventful (you get the picture) showed up. For more pictures check out the Southern Fashion Bloggers site.  We are planning our next meet up in June and I hope to meet some of you lovely ladies for our (indoor) event.

So not a Southern Belle

A friend and I were discussing how we can never achieve the perfect outfit. There is always a mustard stain here (her) or an untamed bra strap waiting to jump out at moments notice (me).  This is why I am so not a southern belle. While I wish I could say that I’m the type of girl that never has a hair out of place it’s just not meant to be no matter how hard I try.

See what I mean? I thought my underpinnings were secure and squared away but that bastard bra crept up anyway. Oh and say hello to my little friend. Yes that is a shrimp tattoo. Yes it is a little silly but it felt appropriate getting it last year after the BP oil spill disaster.  When I moved back home to New Orleans I ate so much shrimp that I seriously thought I might give myself a shellfish allergy.
Oh and don’t tell me I need to cut the grass in the backyard. I’ve been too busy to bust out the weed wacker and our old school push lawn mower.
