Amanda deLeon Spring Runway Show

Last Friday night I attended two New Orleans Fashion Week shows at the Ogden Museum, one of which was Louisiana native Amanda deLeon’s Spring 2012 collection. I met the designer back in May and was afforded the chance to see her previous collection up close and personal. Touching the high end textiles and examining the exquisite craftsmanship of her designs was a treat. Amanda utilizes luxurious fabrics such as blanket soft lambskin leather and wispy chiffon, often in the same dress to create a tough yet feminine aesthetic. While spring is admittedly not her favorite season to design for Amanda took her signature looks and incorporated them into a collection that I loved. Egyptian like collars, pin sharp silhouettes and ethereal, almost cocoon like caplets were only surpassed by my favorite dress of the evening, a fringed frock with a delicate sheer veil ensconcing the swishy details. The color palette remained soft in pale metallic gold, sea foam green, and shades of blue that made me lust for a Caribbean beach.

If you didn’t get a chance to go to the show I’d highly recommend checking out Amanda’s website to learn more about her work, follow her on Tumblr, Facebook  or shop at her Etsy store. She’s definitely one Southern fashion designer to keep your eye on!

Kickstarter: Lia Molly in New Orleans

I’m a sucker for a good Southern fashion designer. Slow Southern Style favorite Seema Sudan has been featured  here, here, and  here and while her knitwear collection Lia Molly is arguably one of the most successful clothing lines based in New Orleans it is still considered a small scale operation, at least by most factory standards. I’ll let Seema tell y’all the story herself via the video below but she really needs your support to take her productions from overseas to the Big Easy.

Seema really appreciates a good thing when she sees it, that good thing being New Orleans. This town is full of inspiration and it is really neat to see so many fashion designers insisting on living here, not only for inspiration  but to plant firm roots and watch their businesses succeed. Head over to Lia Molly’s Kickstarter page and give this project a little boost. You’ll feel good about not only supporting one of New Orleans’ finest but helping an industry grow.

Watch a dream come true

The Shops at Canal Place and Fashion Week New Orleans are asking you to join them in helping a little girl with leukemia realize her dreams of living the live of a fashion model for one special day. Along with several other Children’s Hospital patients Lameika Downs will have her wish granted and receive a professional fashion photo shoot wearing items from Jean Therapy and a custom made dress from Project Runway participant and LSU alum Anthony Ryan Auld. Tracee Dundas and Mallory Domingue of Fashion Week New Orleans will style the looks and photographer Carlton Mickle will capture the day in photos.

There will be live music, special in-store promotions, fall fashion presentations and a meet and greet with Anthony Ryan Auld followed by a Q&A session.  So come out this Thursday from 5-7pm to celebrate One Haute Night.

Objects of Adornment: An art show for fashion

Style is what comes from a careful culmination of exquisite, highly personal objects of adornment. From a simple bow tie to a handmade necklace finishing touches add personality and depth to our outward appearance. Clothing functions as our own wearable art that we can take with us wherever we go and is our most accessible way to express ourselves.

I’m really pleased to announce a project that I’ve been working on for the past few months with some of my favorite Louisiana fashion designers. You are officially invited to Objects of Adornment, an art show at Du Mois Gallery featuring the works of Alicia Zenobia, Ben Azevedo, Lacey Dupre, and Kaci Thomassie. Each of these artists have a fresh perspective on fashion and are creating unique, wearable pieces of art in their own way. Even if you can’t make it to the opening the show will be up for the month of October so you can view the pieces at your convenience.

RSVP on the Facebook event page and I can’t wait to see everyone there!

New Orleans’ Anthropologie One Year Anniversary

Last Friday I had the pleasure of being invited to the New Orleans Anthropologie to partake in their one year anniversary festivities. There were a number of events taking place but I settled on a  jewelry making class with Cynthia Sheridan, a Houston based designer.  Along with her sister Lorena Rodriguez,  Sheridan creates pieces that “transmit soul and spirit to the metals and minerals” under their De Petra jewelry line. It was a real treat being taught how to make one of the sister’s signature pieces, a necklace pouch filled with protective talismans. The sisters were excellent teachers and I can’t wait to try my hand at making more.  Pick up your own special DePetra bijoux online at Anthro.

Lots of pretty thread to choose from

Fashion’s Night Out in New Orleans

Fashion’s Night Out was this Thursday at Saks Fifth Avenue and I was thrilled that Slow Southern Style was featured in the blogger lounge. The night was filled with DJs on all three floors, a fun fashion scavenger hunt, running into familiar faces, drooling over beautiful clothes, and lots of champagne.

Can I be honest with y’all here? I definitely pulled this outfit together in haste. The only reason I wore these loafers is because I didn’t have time to paint my toenails, one of the downfalls of only possessing open toe heels.

Chanel of Chanel Craves is without a doubt one of my favorite Southern Fashion Bloggers. She’s always so perfectly put together, pretty, and she laughs at my dumb jokes. Her boyfriend looked equally well put together as well!

 Speaking of Chanel….

Samantha from Feet First! Samantha did a guest post on Slow Southern Style so it was a real pleasure to finally meet her in person. This picture is a hoot, note that she is squatting and I’m standing on tip toes and she is still taller than me.

I finally met cutie pie Dalton of the Warehouse District and his mom. They were so nice!

Plenty of Marc Jacobs to ogle

Sweet Slow Southern Style reader Kasimu came out to Saks after hearing me talk about it on Twitter AND he was the best dressed gentleman of the night. I just love a guy that can sport a bow tie and a pocket square!

Big thanks to all of my friends that came to hang out, I had a blast chatting with y’all and hope to see each and every one of you again soon. For additional pictures from the evening be sure to check out the Facebook page.

closet overhaul new orleans stylist wardrobe consultation

Slow Southern Styling

After a few nice words of encouragement and a lot of support I’m proud to announce a new little venture I’m starting up, Slow Southern Styling.  Just think of me as your personal stylist for the New Orleans area.

My first client was Megan, a young entrepreneur who was looking to cull her closet and figure out how to freshen up what she already owns. Megan has a lot of basics, and by a lot I mean black leggings for days. She also had a lot of hand me downs clogging her closet and pieces she picked up at clothing swaps that were good but not good for her. I first assessed her entire wardrobe and yanked out what she didn’t need. Anything that wasn’t in good condition had to go, along with unnecessary multiples. Megan has some great pieces, like an enviable cardigan collection but she needed to sort the bad from the good.

Next we assessed what was left. She has great style but relies too heavily on basics so it just took a little convincing to get her to try wearing pieces in new ways. With my creative eye we were able to compose some great, easy outfits with items she already owns. Everything featured here came from her closet!

Megan took notes the entire time to make it easy to remember my suggestions. We made sure to figure out where she needs to fill in the gaps (more shoes!) and how to perk up her basics (better jewelry she’ll be excited to wear).

Interested in booking your own Slow Southern Styling session? I’m available by appointment on Fridays and Saturdays and can be reached at nolagurl{at}gmail{dot{com} if you’d like to learn more about the process and my package rates visit my Slow Southern Styling website. I’m looking forward to hearing from y’all soon!
